She needed sugar. It was something feral within, something deep inside her that raved and clawed beneath her skin, craving something sweet as if it were life blood. She tore through the pantry in search of anything that would suffice. She found boxes of brownie mix, cake mix, frosting, and a full sugar bag. The mix would take too long leaving two options to choose from; go straight to the source or a sweet substitute that would be more filling. She reached for the tub of frosting and tore open the lid, plunging her fingers into the mixture and lifting them to her lips.
She moaned at the chocolate flavor and leaned against the pantry door, her posture slouching as her eyelids fluttered closed. A cough behind her caused her eyes to open and she turned to look at the source. Her husband grinned amusedly at her while shaking his head.
“You really couldn’t wait twenty minutes for the ordered cake to arrive?” he asked.
She shook her head and plunged her fingers back into the frosting. Her husband chuckled and approached, wrapping his arms around her round belly and gently pulling her closer to him. He kissed her temple as she continued to suck frosting from her fingers. He snatched her hand from the inside of the frosting tub and lifted her fingers to his own mouth, sucking the frosting from her fingers one by one as she glared at him.
“I’ll leave you to it,” he told her as he released her fingers, “but you need to eat more than just frosting.”
“I will when the cake arrives,” she replied as she dunked her fingers back into the frosting and continued to eat the sugary substance. “You are not getting any more of my icing, though.”
“I wasn’t going to try to steal more,” he promised and kissed her temple once more before releasing his hold on her.
She gave a soft hum as he stepped away and left the room. She finished off the frosting and tossed the empty tub away. She glared down at her round belly.
“You better be worth this,” she told her belly. “Working off this weight is going to be more of a hassle than it is gaining it.”
Her belly did not respond. She stuck her tongue out at it and turned to go find where her husband had run off to. Perhaps the cake had arrived already, and he was hiding it from her before she could eat it all by herself. He was probably already eating it without her. She went to go check.
