The song was an annoyance. The song “Baby Shark” had apparently been popular in the nineties or something and had been fading into obscurity until some lunatic brought it back and made it into the most obnoxious earworm possible to play on the radio. The “Baby Shark” craze had emerged, and he could not get away from the song. It had not been a problem when he had only heard and sung it at Vacation Bible School.
The lyrics were different, more faith oriented. The lines of the song included “Go to Heaven” and “Party with Jesus” toward the end of the song at Vacation Bible School which the reboot of the song playing on the radio did not include. Either way, the song was getting on Diego’s nerves. He was tempted to go swimming at the beach and search for an actual shark to put him out of his misery but knew that would be a long shot and was not worth the cost to get away from the irritating song.
As the song played over the speakers at the party Diego covered his ears. He could not block out the song completely, especially as half the party, including adults, began belting out the lyrics with abandon. Diego moved further away from the crowd, seeking reprieve from the screaming earworm. He could not move far enough to escape completely but he was no longer facing the worst of the torment. As he reached the back of the room the song approached its end and he let out a relieved sigh the moment it was over.
The next song was significantly more preferable, but Diego still felt irritated from the earworm that was continuing to batter at his internal song memory loop. He tried to focus on the current song playing to drown out the earworm, but the “Baby Shark” melody was stuck. Diego internally cursed and raised his hand to his head in an attempt to rub the song out. This did not work. Diego groaned.
“You okay, dude?” the man next to him asked.
“I’ll be fine,” he replied, still rubbing his forehead. “Just got “Baby Shark” stuck in my head.”
“Tell me about it,” the man next to him replied with a grimace. “It’ll be stuck in my head for the next week and a half at least.”
